Motorway City is an analysis of the road network of Rotterdam.  Here is a summary taken from the twenty page book I made during the Atelier Infrastructure under the guidance of H vd Wal + D Peijper.

Road Traffic Volume Plot showing the centre of Rotterdam.  The city works dept. continuously collect data on traffic-flow. This is fed into a computer program that can make pattern predictions should one part of the network become blocked.  By double plotting in colours like red and green giving black when combined, it is possible to chart the expansion or contraction of traffic volume.

Rotterdam has a hierachy in its road network.  This is visible on the map shown above.  The "Checker-board" motorway ring-road feeds the dual carriageways into the centre and so on into the side streets.
Rotterdam is also particular in having a second network: a diffuse network. "Give way to the right".

These two systems have differing characteristics.  The difuse system has relatively few rules but is slow.  The hierachial network is quick but suffers from bottle-necks at peak flow.
